From Lake Ontario to Your Tap: Find the Main Idea

A glass of water begins with a system

Turn on a tap in Whitby and the water may have started in Lake Ontario, but the trip from lake to glass is not one simple cleaning step. Durham Region operates several drinking-water systems using both surface water, such as Lake Ontario and Lake Simcoe, and groundwater from wells. The process described here is the surface-water route used by plants including those in Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Bowmanville and Newcastle.

The purpose of the system is broader than making water look clear. The Region describes water treatment as taking water from the environment and treating it to produce clean, safe drinking water. That goal is reached by a chain of different jobs: removing large objects and tiny particles, disinfecting the water, moving it through the community, and checking that the system continues to work.[1]

First remove what should not stay

At the intake, lake water moves through a pipe into the plant. Screens catch large objects such as fish or logs. Those screens cannot remove every tiny particle, so the next steps work at a much smaller scale.

During coagulation, a treatment chemical is mixed rapidly into the water so small particles begin to clump together. Flocculation uses slower mixing to help those clumps grow larger. The water then passes through filters containing materials such as anthracite or granular activated carbon and sand. Unwanted particles are left behind as the water moves through the filter. Each step has a narrower job, but together they support the larger goal of producing drinking water.[1]

Disinfection does a different job

Clear-looking water is not automatically ready to drink. Micro-organisms can be too small to see, so treatment also includes disinfection. Durham Region adds chlorine at multiple locations in its surface-water treatment process. Ontario's drinking-water rules distinguish primary disinfection, which happens before water reaches the first consumer, from secondary disinfection, which maintains a disinfectant residual as water travels through the distribution system.

For surface-water systems, Ontario requires treatment capable of chemically assisted filtration and primary disinfection, or an approved process that produces equal or better water quality. This is why a summary such as “the filter makes the water safe” is too narrow: filtration is important, but it is only one part of a multi-step treatment process.[2]

Treatment is not the end of the trip

After treatment, pumps move drinking water into an underground distribution network. Water can pass through storage towers and reservoirs before reaching homes, schools and businesses. Pumping stations help maintain enough pressure for the system to deliver water where it is needed.

This distribution stage matters to the main idea because safe drinking water must arrive at the tap, not merely leave the treatment plant. A treatment step can work correctly while a distribution problem still needs attention. That is also why secondary disinfection is designed to keep a disinfectant residual in the system after the main treatment process is finished.[1]

The system is checked, not simply trusted

Durham Region says it tests drinking water daily and continuously monitors its municipal water plants. Ontario also requires monitoring of disinfection performance for municipal residential systems. The Region publishes annual water-quality reports that describe each system and summarize test results and other required information.

Put the sections together and a stronger main idea appears: safe tap water depends on a connected system of treatment, distribution and monitoring, with different steps doing different jobs. Details such as screens, filters, chlorine, reservoirs and reports matter because they support that larger idea. A good main idea is not the longest sentence or the most technical detail; it is the idea that explains why the important details belong together.[3]

Topic is not the same as main idea

The topic can be only a few words, such as “drinking-water treatment.” The main idea says what the text explains about that topic.

Use the umbrella test

A strong main idea should cover most important sections. If it explains only filtration or only chlorine, it is too narrow for this passage.

Watch for answers that are true but incomplete

A detail can be completely accurate and still be the wrong answer to a main-idea question. Accuracy is necessary, but coverage also matters.

Too broad is also wrong

A sentence such as “All water systems work exactly the same way” goes beyond this passage. A main idea must fit the text without adding unsupported certainty.

Paragraph main ideas can be smaller

The whole text has one central idea, while each section can have a narrower main idea that supports the whole.

Common mistakes

Choosing the first fact you remember.

Why this fails: Memorable details such as chlorine or water towers may be important, but a whole-text main idea must explain more than one section.

Picking an answer because it repeats exact words from the passage.

Why this fails: A copied phrase may describe only one detail. Main ideas often paraphrase several details instead of repeating one sentence.

Treating a true detail as proof of a much larger claim.

Why this fails: The fact that Whitby has a surface-water plant does not prove that every Durham community gets water from Lake Ontario.

Making the summary longer by listing everything.

Why this fails: A summary should preserve the central structure and key ideas, not copy every treatment step and example.
