Reasoning

Find the rule before choosing the answer.

Reasoning practice should train the habit of identifying relationships, testing rules and rejecting tempting distractors.

A simple classification example

Which number does not belong?

12, 18, 24, 31, 36Four numbers are multiples of 6. The outlier is 31.

The important part is not the answer. It is stating the rule clearly enough that another person could test it.

When more than one rule seems possible

Good reasoning questions are designed so one rule explains the set better than alternatives. Prefer the rule that is simple, consistent and uses all relevant information.

Try three

  1. Which does not belong: 8, 16, 32, 48, 64?
  2. Complete: 3, 6, 12, 24, ___
  3. If CAT โ†’ DBU, what happens to DOG using the same letter rule?
