An 8-Week CCAT-Style Practice Plan for Grade 3

A low-pressure progression from format familiarity to mixed reasoning, timing and error review using original practice rather than secure assessment items.

Scope: Independent educational guide. Study Commons is not affiliated with DDSB, Nelson, Pearson, CCAT or CogAT publishers. Practice guidance uses original reasoning examples and does not reproduce secure test questions or predict gifted identification or placement.

Before the plan

This is independent Study Commons guidance, not a DDSB-required study schedule. If your school provides instructions about preparation, follow those instructions.

For an elementary learner, short regular sessions are usually more sustainable than marathon worksheets. A starting pattern is about 15–20 minutes several times per week, adjusted to the child's attention and stress level.

Week 1 — Baseline and low-pressure exposure

Show original examples from all three reasoning domains without a timer. Record which task formats are unfamiliar and which errors come from vocabulary, arithmetic, spatial reasoning or attention.

Week 2 — Verbal relationships

Practise analogies, categories, sentence context and precise relationship language. Build vocabulary through ordinary reading and Word Lab rather than memorizing answer pairs.

Week 3 — Number analogies, puzzles and series

Practise identifying a rule before calculating. Include constant rules, two-step transformations and simple alternating series. Ask the learner to explain why the rule works across all visible terms.

Week 4 — Figure classification

Use an attribute checklist: shape, count, shading, orientation, position, size, inside/outside and symmetry. Require a verbal rule before selecting an answer.

Week 5 — Matrices and spatial reasoning

Add row/column matrix rules, rotation, reflection and paper-folding reversals. Keep the set small enough that every error can be discussed.

Week 6 — Mixed timed sets

Introduce short time limits only after the basic formats are comfortable. Mix domains so the learner must identify the task rather than rely on a worksheet heading.

Week 7 — Advanced weak areas

Use the error log to choose practice. Increase distractor quality and combine two rules, but do not simply make numbers larger or vocabulary obscure.

Week 8 — Simulation, review and confidence

Use a moderate mixed set, then spend more time reviewing reasoning than celebrating the raw number correct. End with predictable routines: read carefully, name the rule, eliminate, check, move on.

What to record after each session

  • What task type was practised?
  • What rule did the child identify?
  • Was the error knowledge, reasoning, calculation, spatial tracking, attention or timing?
  • Could the child explain the correction?
  • What one skill should be revisited next time?
