The 9 CCAT-Style Reasoning Skills Explained

Three batteries, nine reasoning tasks
The CCAT 7 brochure describes three broad batteries — verbal, quantitative and nonverbal — with three subtests in each. The useful learning goal is not memorizing surface examples. It is recognizing the reasoning operation underneath them.
- Verbal: Verbal Analogies, Sentence Completion, Verbal Classification.
- Quantitative: Number Analogies, Number Puzzles, Number Series.
- Nonverbal: Figure Matrices, Paper Folding, Figure Classification.
Verbal Analogies
An analogy asks the learner to identify a relationship in one pair and preserve that relationship — including its direction — in another pair. Good practice relationships include category→member, part→whole, object→function, tool→use, animal→home, young animal→adult, cause→effect, degree, material→product, synonym and antonym.
A common error is choosing words that are related but reversing the direction. A child who can explain the relationship aloud is less likely to fall for that trap.
Sentence Completion
Sentence completion combines vocabulary, grammar and context. A strong routine is: decide what kind of word fits grammatically, infer the meaning demanded by the sentence, then compare every option against both constraints.
This makes ordinary reading and vocabulary depth relevant. The goal is not obscure-word memorization; it is using syntax and context efficiently.
Verbal Classification
Classification asks for a precise common category or relationship. 'These words are all kind of related' is not enough. The child should be able to name the shared property and test whether a candidate really belongs.
Number Analogies
Number analogies transfer a numerical transformation from one pair to another. Useful practice families include +k, −k, ×2/×3, division, doubling/halving, place-value transformations and two-step rules.
A tempting rule is not sufficient unless it explains the full relationship and transfers cleanly.
Number Puzzles
Number puzzles require reasoning backward from missing quantities or balanced relationships. Arithmetic fluency matters because it reduces working-memory load, but the target is structural reasoning rather than worksheet speed.
Number Series
Series can begin with constant addition, subtraction or multiplication and progress to alternating rules, changing differences, recursive patterns and two interwoven sequences.
A reliable question is: what repeatable rule explains every visible transition?
Figure Matrices
Matrices may change several visual attributes across rows and columns: shape, number, orientation, shading, position, size, inside/outside, overlap, rotation or element addition/removal.
When the display is complex, inspect one attribute at a time instead of trying to solve the whole picture at once.
Paper Folding
Paper folding is a spatial-reflection task. When folded paper is punched and then unfolded, each unfolding reflects existing hole positions across a fold line. A useful strategy is to reverse the folds one at a time.
Figure Classification
Figure classification asks for a shared visual property. Replace vague impressions such as 'they look alike' with a testable statement such as 'each figure has two closed shapes and exactly one shaded region.'
